West Nile Virus

Description

West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause West Nile fever, which may lead to serious neurological diseases such as encephalitis or meningitis. Most people infected with the virus do not show symptoms, but about 20% may experience fever, headache, body aches, and rash. A small percentage may develop severe illness.

Prevention

1. Mosquito Control

  • Eliminate standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding sites and use insecticides as needed.

2. Use of Insect Repellents

  • Apply insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus to exposed skin when outdoors.

3. Wear Protective Clothing

  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, especially during peak mosquito activity times (dawn and dusk).

4. Install Screens

  • Use screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of living spaces.

5. Stay Informed

  • Monitor local health advisories for West Nile virus activity and take extra precautions during outbreaks.

By following these preventive measures, the risk of West Nile virus transmission can be significantly reduced.
